On 24 January 2019, Benjamin Hübner (Product Manager & Business Development Agriculture, Continental AG) was a guest at the Junior Alumni Career Talks and told students, alumni and interested listeners in the Audimax about his career path to date and what he has learned about transitioning from studying into a job.

Junior Alumni Career Talk with Benjamin Hübner (Continental AG)

Studying at Kiel University
Entrepreneurial thinking, being open minded and the North German serenity – Benjamin Hübner introduced himself to the audience right from the start with these three positive personality traits. His dream job when he started studying in Kiel was as plain as day: become a farmer and take over his parents’ farm with 150 dairy cows. During his degree, however, he started to doubt this career path and decided not to go into farming but to pursue a career into industry.

Tips for a successful internship
The first step in this direction was an internship with John Deere after completing his Bachelor’s degree. Before the application process begins, you should ask yourself “which internships match my interests and skills?” Good preparation for the interview is also important. You should know a few facts about the company, as well as its philosophy, and have thought about what you hope to gain from the internship. “An internship is definitely a good opportunity to get a taste of a company, to see what a normal working day is like, but also to collect a few contacts,” is what Hübner learned from his experience.

How do I enter the world of work with success?
Your own network can also be a crucial part of your success when starting out in the world of work. Check whether you know anyone who works for the company, from previous internships or via friends perhaps, and ask them what was especially important at their job interviews. This was how Hübner was successful in his own application process at Continental AG, where he has been employed as Product Manager & Business Development Agriculture since 2017.
